Mark 5:41-42 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
When I read this, this morning I saw something I have not noticed before. Jesus is still saying to us, Talitha cumi! He speaks through His Holy Spirit to us so we can turn, receive Him and be saved! What a God! What a Savior! How awesome He is and how wonderful and vast His love for man is! Twelve years of age – is about the age of accountability where we become aware of right and wrong. Jesus tells the damsel to rise and walk. I take this to mean walk in His Spirit, and in His ways. And, they were astonished with a great astonishment. Doesn’t that sum up the way the world looks at us especially when they see God move powerfully and lovingly?
Mark 5:39-40 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
Just prior to this, Jesus was told the damsel was dead, and the whole house laughed Him to scorn when He told them she was not dead but asleep. Isn’t that what the world does to us today as we reach out to the lost, the bound and the oppressed? You see, the Gospel is still the Good News that there is a Savior and that He saves, that He paid the price for our sin and that He is all sufficient for all of our needs. The world cannot receive what it does not believe.
Mark 5:43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
Finally, Jesus commands them to feed the girl. He has also commanded us to feed our brothers and sisters. Not mere food, but the food of the Spirit – His Word. We are to feed one another with the true Bread from Heaven, with the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. Think about that!
And praise God for His righteousness, His holiness and His awesome love and generosity! He is the Holy Anointed One of Israel! He is our Lord, our Master, our Savior and our very life! We love you Jesus!
