[Job 28:12-13 NKJV] 12 “But where can wisdom be found? And where [is] the place of understanding? 13 Man does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living.
Job seems an unlikely place to find a discourse on wisdom – yet, chapter 28 is just that. Job describes wisdom’s price as far above gold or silver; rubies, coral or quartz or even topaz. It’s value is far beyond all these things.
[Job 28:14-20 NKJV] 14 The deep says, ‘[It is] not in me’; And the sea says, ‘[It is] not with me.’ 15 It cannot be purchased for gold, Nor can silver be weighed [for] its price. 16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx or sapphire. 17 Neither gold nor crystal can equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for jewelry of fine gold. 18 No mention shall be made of coral or quartz, For the price of wisdom [is] above rubies. 19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold. 20 “From where then does wisdom come? And where [is] the place of understanding?
He asks where does it come from or where is the place of understanding, and then asserts that God understands it’s ways and he alone knows it’s place.
[Job 28:23 NKJV] God understands its way, And He knows its place.
And, the culmination? It is as is stated elsewhere – the fear of the Lord – that is wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding.
[Job 28:27 NKJV] Then He saw [wisdom] and declared it; He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out. 28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that [is] wisdom, And to depart from evil [is] understanding.’ ”
Wisdom is so precious! It is better and more desirable than any amount of gold or silver. Here’s a sample of the benefits of possessing the fear of the Lord:
[Psa 34:11 NKJV] 11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
[Psalm 111:10 NKJV] 10 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do [His commandments]. His praise endures forever.
[Proverbs 1:7 NKJV] 7 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [But] fools despise wisdom and instruction.
[Proverbs 2:5 NKJV] 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.
[Proverbs 9:10 NKJV] 10 “The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One [is] understanding.
[Proverbs10:27 NKJV] 27 The fear of the LORD prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
[Proverbs14:26-27 NKJV] 26 In the fear of the LORD [there is] strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD [is] a fountain of life, To turn [one] away from the snares of death.
[Proverbs15:33 NKJV] 33 The fear of the LORD [is] the instruction of wisdom, And before honor [is] humility.
[Proverbs16:6 NKJV] 6 In mercy and truth Atonement is provided for iniquity; And by the fear of the LORD [one] departs from evil.
[Proverbs19:23 NKJV] 23 The fear of the LORD [leads] to life, And [he who has it] will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil.
[Proverbs :4 NKJV] 4 By humility [and] the fear of the LORD [Are] riches and honor and life.
In Isaiah, the seven-fold Spirit of the Lord is revealed to us
[Isaiah 11:2-3 NKJV] 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight [is] in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
[Isaiah 33:6 NKJV] 6 Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, [And] the strength of salvation; The fear of the LORD [is] His treasure.
Proverbs 8 talks about wisdom too and I read it once a month (on the 8th), and look forward to it every time – such a wonder – remarkable! Wisdom calls out to men!
[Pro 8:1 NKJV] 1 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?
[Proverbs 8:10-11 NKJV] 10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; 11 For wisdom [is] better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
We are also told by King Solomon – to get wisdom and understanding – we should take heed and obey!
[Proverbs 4:1-5 NKJV] 1 Hear, [my] children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding; 2 For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law. 3 When I was my father’s son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 He also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. 5 Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Father, we thank you for wisdom, for your word to us on this sacred matter – it is a more sure word and we who are wise take heed and regard it as the treasure that it is. And, we praise you for it for it was your good pleasure to give us this treasure! So many references to wisdom and understanding, it is hard to imagine someone missing this, but many do. Please open our eyes and ears to wisdom – the fear of the Lord! We love and adore you Lord! Your wisdom is unimaginable! And, yet you share it all with us! Bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me, bless his Holy Name!
