In the book of Acts, chapter 13, verse 48, we read
And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
When I read that this morning, it struck me and stuck with me. This usually happens when I need to examine a verse more closely, so that’s what I’m doing now.
Paul and Barnabas were under attack by the leading Jews – devout men and honorable women, and the chief men of the city of Antioch. This is the same place where we were first called Christians. They were under attack by the very same people they were trying to reach, and those doing the attacking were considered good people. And yet, Paul and his company were actually chased from the city.
I did a search and the word ordained only occurs 35 times in the Authorized Version; 16 times in the old testament and 19 times in the new testament. The whole notion of being ordained to eternal life is a remarkable thought! It reminds me of
John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
Thus, we (those who believe) too have been ordained to eternal life! This occurred before the foundations of the world were set in place because God saw the end from the beginning and He knew who would love him this very day! Though we walk through much trial and often get bogged down in the mire of life – God knew! And, He ordained us to eternal life! What a way to begin the new year meditating on this promise…
Oh what a savior! What a God He is! The Great I AM who was and is and is to come! Hallelujah! We win! Words are inadequate to glorify such a magnificent and wondrous God! Yet, that is all I have – so,
Psalm 34:1-3 I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the LORD;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the LORD with me,
And let us exalt His name together!
Father, we love you and adore you! You are the most holy, righteous and altogether glorious God! There is none like you Lord! You are awesome and incredible in all your ways! We thank you and praise you – for you! And, for Jesus! And, for the Holy Spirit! You thought of everything we would need and provide it so well. You are good! And, we praise your name! Help us to finish this race well Lord. Help us oh Lord that every breathe we draw glorifies you! I pray in Jesus’ mighty and matchless name! Amen!
