Watch, Stand Fast in the Faith, Be Brave, Be Strong

I love this verse!

[1 Corinthians 16:13 NKJV] 13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.

Let’s break this down:

Watch – the Lord himself commands us to watch:

[Matthew 24:42 NKJV] 42 “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.
[Matthew 25:13 NKJV] 13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
[Mark 13:37 NKJV] 37 “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”

We need to watch for His return, and we need to watch so we are alert to the wiles and temptations of the enemy.

Stand fast in the Faith – The enemy tries to wear us down and prevent us from completing our destiny.

[Daniel 7:25 KJV] 25 And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

We must not waiver, or grow faint. We must behave like we are a stake warrior who is one who stakes himself to the ground and will not relent nor give way until he has won the day or lost his life in the battle.

Be Brave – This isn’t easy in the face of a full on assault from the enemy of our souls, yet

[1 John 4:4 NKJV] 4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

In the Greek, the word is andrizomai which is to make oneself like a man, to be brave. In other words to gird up our loins:

[Job 40:7 KJV] 7 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
[Jeremiah 1:17 KJV] 17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.
[1 Peter 1:13 KJV] 13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

We could also say, set our faces like flint, that we would do all we are called to do without regard to the accusations and wiles of the enemy.

Be Strong – The Lord tells Joshua 3 times in the 1st chapter of Joshua to be strong and of a good courage!

[Joshua 1:6-7, 9 NKJV] 6 “Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. … 9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God [is] with you wherever you go.”

There are so many other examples of the Lord telling his people to be strong – here are a few:

[1 Kings 2:2 NKJV] 2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man.
[1 Chronicles 28:10 NKJV] 10 “Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be strong, and do it.”
[2 Chronicles 15:7 NKJV] 7 “But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!”
[Daniel 10:19 NKJV] 19 And he said, “O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace [be] to you; be strong, yes, be strong!” So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

Ah Lord! You have given us clear instructions and we have your Spirit within us! Help us to do just as you commanded us! Help us to fulfill all your commands in this verse and to do it joyfully for we are yours and you are ours! We are the happiest people on earth, because you are our portion and we are complete in you, and you make all things new! Hallelujah! We adore you Lord! I pray in Jesus’ name! Amen!
